Chennai organisation invites donations for Nepal

AID India, extending support to Goonj, an organisation that is collecting material from across the country, is setting up a temporary collection centre in Royapettah.

City residents, who want to donate towards relief efforts in Nepal where a devastating earthquake has left thousands dead, can do so via an organisation here.

AID India, extending support to Goonj, an organisation that is collecting material from across the country, is setting up a temporary collection centre in Royapettah.

“We welcome donations but residents should remember that there are specific requirements and while some things are urgently required, others are unnecessary,” said Selva Ganapathy, a volunteer with AID India.

What is required: tarpaulins, dry ration, good quality solar lamps, basic medicines, crutches, ropes, utensils, torches and batteries, blankets, sanitary pads, basic toiletries, wheelchairs, bed sheets and mats.

What is not required: clothes, water, perishable items, cooked food, expired material, half-consumed liquid medicines, sandals with heels, used garments.

“We are also looking for someone who can bear the logistics expenses of shipping the collected material from Chennai to Delhi. If any company or resident can do this, please do contact us. Anybody interested in volunteering can also contact us,” he said.

25 people return

Twenty-five people rescued from Nepal arrived at the Chennai airport here on Tuesday. In the morning, eight passengers, based out Salem, Kancheepuram and Chennai, who had gone to Nepal, arrived by IndiGo and Air India flights at 9.25 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. respectively. Later in the day, in another Air India flight, 17 people, based out of Puducherry, Tiruppur, Salem, Chennai and Tirunelveli returned. The passengers were first taken to Delhi from Kathmandu and then brought to Chennai.
