A 450-bed new hospital was commissioned in Chromepet. The Dr. Rela Institute and Medical Centre is on the same premises as the Balaji Medical College and Hospital of Bharath University.

The three-storey institute, which was inaugurated by M.K. Stalin, president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, on Wednesday, will offer speciality medical care. The hospital would offer primary and secondary care apart from quaternary care and would have the largest intensive care unit in the country for liver transplant. The institute, equipped with diagnostic facilities such as cath lab, MRI and CT scan, will offer specialised treatment in oncology and cardiology.

The institute will be headed by renowned liver transplant surgeon Mohamed Rela. Dr. Rela graduated from Stanley Medical College in 1980 and later went to King’s College, London for higher studies. He has authored over 500 papers and has a H index of 52, said a professor.

The surgeon made his way to the Guinness Book of World Records when he performed a liver transplant on a five-day-old child, who received a portion of her mother’s liver.
