As the nation was celebrating the 116th birth anniversary of freedom fighter and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, K. Kamaraj, on July 15, Thiruvancheri Panchayat Union Primary School paid a worthy tribute to him on that day. Around 20 students from the Narikuravar community, who had earlier dropped out, were once again enrolled at Thiruvancheri Panchayat Union Primary School, as part of the institution’s ‘ Kalvi Valarchi Naal ’ celebration. The day was observed to mark the birth anniversary of Kamaraj. District Education Officer (DEO) and Assistant Elementary Education Officer (AEEO) were the chief guests.
Study material and uniforms were given to the students for free. A procession of the students along with their parents was held. Educational kits worth ₹40,000 was donated by sponsors. The newly enrolled children lighted the traditional lamp. Cultural programmes and prize distributions formed part of the event. Also, on another occasion, the new students were taken on a procession up to the school campus, along with nadhaswaram band music. Parents of the students were also present during the occasion. After reaching the premises, the children were crowned by S.J. Panimayam Fernando, school headmistress.
She said, “Not many people are inclined to admit their children to government schools. We started this initiative to change the mindset of such people. This is not the first time we are doing it, even last year we welcomed the students with bands. “Last year, the school had 115 new students and this year so far we have enrolled 45 students. To develop bonding among students and teachers, we conducted a rally on World Environment Day on the theme ‘ban plastic.’
