May 14, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:37 am IST - CHENNAI:

M.K. Mohan, who represents DMK from the Anna Nagar constituency, is the richest candidate in the city.

He has declared assets worth Rs. 170 crore. A councillor of the Chennai Corporation in the past, he has been handpicked by the party leadership to fight Textiles and Handlooms Minister Gokula Indira, who is seeking a re-election from the Anna Nagar constituency.

Once a brick kiln owner, he purchased land in various localities of the city in the past, says his son M. Karthik. "The value of land has gone up in the past two decades and so we have no hesitation in declaring the assets," he says adding that his father has no criminal case against him.

Mr. Mohan has come with his own set of promises, ranging from a toll free number to lodge complaints to a separate manifesto for every ward in the constituency.

“When we went out to ask for votes, the voters complained that politicians knock on their doors only at the time of elections. We will have monthly meetings," he said.
