Chennai NGO brings organic food to your table

Organic food as a means to a healthy lifestyle is gaining popularity among city residents, say representatives of NGO Community Organisation for Rural Development (CORD), who, on Wednesday, announced their plans to launch an organic lunch delivery system in the city.

The city currently has at least eight super markets and several small stores that sell only organic food and vegetables, they said.

Encouraged by the patronage to the stores, CORD is launching a vegetarian lunch that will be prepared using produce from farmers in Kancheepuram and Puducherry, and cooked at a kitchen run by women self-help groups. The pure vegetarian fare will be available for door delivery from next week across the city.

The lunch package will replace the staple rice with organic ingredients and will also feature millets, which, representatives from CORD said, was not only healthy but also what the population of the region had traditionally consumed before the Green revolution in the late 1960s.

“While a lot of people are talking of the benefits of organic food and converting to it, it has been difficult to get such food outside their homes,” G. Anand, managing trustee of CORD, said. “We are bridging this gap and bringing the food to the table.”

The lunch package at Rs. 195 can be ordered a day in advance by calling CORD at the following numbers: 9444274141 or 9840279596. There will be a delivery charge for orders under five numbers.

In the lunch presented at the media event on Wednesday, varieties of millet were used — ‘saamai’ for the Sambar rice, ‘varagu’ for the curd rice and a mixture of ‘thinai’, ‘kambu’, ragi and organic wheat for the roti.
