Chennai General Post Office now has a passport seva kendra and gets a steady flow of applicants from north Chennai.

On an average, about 40 residents visit the GPO to process their applications for passports. Postal officials have been trained to verify the documents, capture photographs and process the applications.

Manju Raja, a resident of Thambu Chetty Street, said, “It has become easy for me to carry out passport related work, like renewal, at the Chennai GPO, that is only a few streets away. I’m able to finish work faster and save time. Last time, I had to travel to Aminjikarai for renewing my son’s passport.”

No need to travel

Following a memorandum of understanding between the Department of Posts and the Ministry of External Affairs, 29 post offices now have passport seva kendras across the State. Of this, eight are in Chennai city region. Since January 27, Kancheepuram district too has the facility in the head post office and people now don’t have to travel to Chennai for any passport related work, officials said.

R. Anand, Postmaster General, Chennai City Region, said there was a steady growth in the number of applications received and processed through post offices.
