Thus Spake Cooum Chennai

Chennai Corporation to play a key role in Cooum makeover

Following a resolution by the Chennai Corporation Council this summer, the civic body is set to do a study on the restoration of heritage landscape along the Cooum river.

At the council meeting on April 30, Mayor Saidai Duraisamy said the civic body would spend Rs.100 crore for the project that included solid waste management, footpaths and parks.

With assistance from the Heritage Conservation Committee of Chennai Metropolitan Area, the Corporation will play a key role in creating well-designed landscape around heritage buildings along the Cooum.

The civic body has floated bids for work on parks, footpaths and cycle tracks along the river. The civic body will also start identifying heritage premises for a makeover.

“One important aspect of the makeover is the reversal of damages done by unplanned or haphazard urban development along the Cooum. The plan to demolish more than 25 buildings on the premises of Ripon Buildings to develop a park will be the first work to restore heritage along the river,” said an official.

Even as Chennai Corporation is planning to demolish buildings along the Cooum, the work on the makeover is likely to offer employment opportunities to a number of people by leading to a rise in the number of tourists to spots along the river. The State government has allocated Rs.1,705 crore for the project, and given administrative sanction for work to the tune of Rs.100 crore of the Rs.355 crore to be provided by the Corporation.

The Corporation will complete the work on removing solid waste dumped on the river banks at an estimated cost of Rs.7.13 crore this year. The civic body will demolish hundreds of unauthorised buildings to develop parks and footpaths at Rs.39.87 crore. By 2018, Cooum with a new landscape, clean environment and diversity of fauna will offer residents and tourists better public health, education opportunities, livelihood and groundwater.

River Cooum will continue to be the key aspect of Chennai Corporation’s proposal to develop Chennai into an important tourist destination and business hub, the officials said.
