Chennai Adoption Drive (CAD), one of the city's most popular animal welfare groups, is organising its next adoption event on the 5th of August, Sunday between 10 am and 3 pm at No. 6, First Avenue, Boat Club Road, Near Hotel Park Sheraton, Kotturpuram, Chennai.

The event will feature dozens of healthy, vaccinated puppies, kittens and dogs for adoption free of cost. All the adopting family needs to do is provide address and ID proof after an interview. There will be mandatory follow-up visits conducted by CAD to check on the well-being of the pets. Since its inception just two years ago, CAD has successfully found adoptive families for over 300 rescued animals and has inspired several Chennaiites to adopt homeless pets.

Dermatologist Dr. Shwetha Rahul who adopted her mongrel puppy 'Milo' from Chennai Adoption Drive earlier this year is a strong believer in adopting native breeds based on personal experience. "Foreign breeds like German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers really suffer in summers", she says. "We should get over our obsession with pedigree breeds and start adopting Indian dogs". She observes that mongrels are low-maintenance on account of their local origin. "Mongrels are the easiest dogs to maintain. They don't shed much fur and are extremely adaptive. My husband works two jobs, and just taking Milo for a walk gives him such a sense of happiness and releases his stress. Dogs give unconditional love and ask for nothing in return. And medically speaking, children who grow up with dogs have fewer risks of acquired bronchial asthma".

CAD founder Jennifer Jacob-Murali Anand believes that adoption is the best way to get an animal. "Chennai Adoption Drive is an excellent forum to adopt from, as the animals at our events have been rescued from bad or difficult situations, and are fostered by large-hearted people who hope that they will find the best homes. Not only will the person adopting from here be taking home a friend, but he/she will also be saving a life".
