Several litres of drinking water were wasted on Manali Road, Korukkupet, on Tuesday owing to a leak in the valve of a pipeline carrying water to residential localities in the area.
Water gushed out of the pipeline on Manali Road and flowed on to adjacent streets in Kannagi Nagar and Karumariamman Nagar. Residents said the water has been seeping out for a week now.
S.M. Parasuraman of Karumariamman Nagar said the leak had been occurring for over an hour every morning, when water is supplied to the residential localities. Water flows into the nearby stormwater drain, and stagnates on the second and third streets of Karumariamman Nagar and dries up by the afternoon.
Though Metrowater staff members were attempting to fix the problem, the leak has been continuing, much to the dismay of residents, he said.
Many residents of the area depend on water supplied through the pipeline as well as tankers by Chennai Metrowater, for their daily needs. They suggested the damaged pipeline or valve be replaced to prevent recurring problems.
Sources in the Metrowater said work is on to repair the damaged valve on the pipeline that supplies water to Ezhil Nagar. Valves are fixed at regular intervals in pipelines to regulate and provide equal volume of water to various residential localities.
