A walk for better access

March 16, 2014 03:23 pm | Updated May 19, 2016 09:08 am IST - CHENNAI:

How disabled-friendly are our roads? Do important locations in the city have ramps?

Tech-savvy youngsters in the city have come up with an innovative solution to find answers to such questions. Next month, a group of 70 youngsters associated with the Google Developers Group will go around the city clicking pictures of roads that lead to famous landmarks in the city.

The photos and videos will be shared with NGOs that work on disability issues.

“We plan to conduct the event in the second week of April. The event will also be on shared live on Google hangout for instant feedback from people,” said K. Karthik, one of the organisers of Google Developers Group in the city.

The group plans to start the walk in Mylapore, Karthik said, adding, “The walk will bring out the essence of the city. It is also an attempt to provide an experience to people who have been denied access.”

The photo walk is one of the many events the group – mostly comprising students and IT professionals — has planned to spread awareness about new technologies in the city. On Saturday, the group organised a programme, ‘Dent in the Universe’ to encourage women in the IT industry to take up entrepreneurship.

Another organiser, Swaathi K., said, “The point of these events is also to ask women to step out of the IT culture and explore new technologies other than what is taught in colleges.”
