Mobile urinals yet to pass public test

The toilet unit is made of pre-fabricated plastic materials and costs about Rs. one lakh

May 21, 2014 10:00 am | Updated 10:00 am IST - CHENNAI:

Catch sight of those fancy, molded plastic mobile urinals that have recently cropped up in the city?

They are the handiwork of the Chennai Corporation, in its desperate attempt to prevent urination on the road.

The toilets, however, remain largely unused.

A senior Corporation official involved in the project said the mobile toilet model had been selected from a bunch of designs for its simple and cost-effective design.

It is made of pre-fabricated plastic materials, has a water tank and sinks, and is easy to install and maintain.

The official said a contractor had been posted to clean the toilets in the mornings and evenings.

The official said, in a city where pavements are used as public convenience by people, such a facility would come in handy. Also, it is not possible to build toilets due to space constraints and maintenance hassles.

Costing around Rs. one lakh each, the mobile toilets have been installed in 10 places on arterial roads like South Boag Road, Valluvarkottam High Road, near Semmozhi Poonga, and Dr. Besant Road, under the Kodambakkam and Teynampet zones.

Officials said they would soon collect feedback from the public, about the usability and cleanliness of these toilets, and consider installing more of them across the city.
