Chennai Metrowater is set to launch mobile digital labs to monitor water

Soon, city residents will be able to ascertain the quality of piped Metrowater without much hassle. Chennai Metrowater is set to launch mobile digital laboratories that will help monitor the water.

The mobile labs, fitted with modern equipment to test six parameters, including turbidity, residual chlorine and total dissolved solids, will visit localities across the city to test the water samples and provide results in a few minutes.

Any resident who wants to find out the quality of the water reaching her household will be able to approach the Metrowater engineers for help.

At present, Metrowater’s staff manually collects over 2,500 water samples daily from various points including distribution points and pipelines at the consumers’ end. But it takes a few hours for the results from the Kilpauk water analysis lab to be conveyed to the respective area offices.

“We will be able to provide a print-out of the results immediately. One mobile lab will be shared by three zones,” said an official. The water agency has also installed inline water quality monitoring devices in 50 locations across the city to keep a tab on the quality of water supplied through pipelines running for a distance of over 5,000 km. Sampling pumps fixed to pipelines will carry water to these GSM/GPRS enabled devices comprising analysers to test residual chlorine, pH and turbidity.

It will automatically generate results and transmit data to the control room in the headquarters and respective area offices through mobile text messages. This will help engineers to zero in on the source of the problem faster and rectify it instead of waiting for residents to complain, said an official. Metrowater plans to install more such devices, particularly in north Chennai where problems of water quality recur. However, residents want the water agency to be quicker in arresting the water pollution once identified.
