DD College students intensify stir

Doctors for Social Equality released a statement saying that the government should take over DD Medical College.

Students of the DD Medical College, Tiruvallur, stepped up their protests on Tuesday, with 33 women students gathering outside the Secretariat premises.

When they were not allowed inside, some students attempted self-immolation by dousing themselves with kerosene. They were stopped by the police, who detained them at the Kondithope police quarters.

Later in the day, close to 40 students attempted to stage a road roko at the Moolakothalam junction. They too were arrested and detained. All the students were released around 5.30 p.m. The students, of the 2011-12 and 2012-13 batches, want the government to take over their college –— which was de-recognised by the Medical Council of India in 2012 — or admit them to government medical colleges.

“Three years of our life have been wasted and we have tried everything possible. We don’t know what to do now,” said one of the students. They also claimed that police had lathicharged some of the male students.

Meanwhile, Doctors for Social Equality released a statement saying that the government should take over DD Medical College.

Last year, students of the 2010-11 batch, were accommodated in government medical colleges across the State. However, the Madras High Court earlier this year said students of the subsequent two batches were not entitled to be accommodated.
