Communication is one of the key aspects of employability. Often, students may have the knowledge, but not the ability to communicate it in an effective manner, said Lakshmi Narayanan, chairman of ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu (ICTACT).
Effective thinking, idea generation and effectively communicating one’s viewpoint are skills essential to all employees and this is something that cannot be taught in a class. The only way students can develop communication skills is through their own efforts, he said. The best way to learn soft skills is to encourage students to think, challenge thoughts and debate ideas with peers, said Mr. Narayanan.
For this reason, ICTACT will conduct Statewide communication skill competitions for college students, called YouthTalk, a talk-a-thon that will encourage colleges to bring out their ideas and YouthPRESENT, where students will be judged on their presentation skills.
The competitions will take place concurrently in Chennai, Tiruchi, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Salem. This is in order to encourage those studying in colleges in smaller towns to participate, said Mr. Narayanan.
