At Tag Centre last evening, V.R. Anil Kumar’s book, Vivaha Samskara – In Grihya Sutras of Four Vedas , was released under the auspices of the Madras Book Club, in association with Rotary Club of Madras South.
The book, which is an adaptation of Dr. Kumar’s doctoral thesis, provides an overview of Hindu scriptures, samskaras and a detailed analysis of the Hindu marriage ceremony, as depicted in the 17 Grihya Sutras belonging to branches of the four Vedas.
The book also features original Sanskrit texts with English translations.
Dr. Kumar, talking about what triggered him to write the book, said, “It was when my own son got married to an American, and I was asked to provide a Sanskrit quote at the wedding, my interest in the subject began.”
The drive to learn more led Dr. Kumar to pursue his passion and complete his PhD. in Sankrit from University of Madras, at the age of 68.
Published by Indology Books from New Delhi, the book was officially released by N. Vittal, former Central Vigilance commissioner.
The first copy was received by S. Padmanabhan, head of Sankrit department, University of Madras, while the second copy was accepted by R.T. Chari of Tag Centre.
