Two runs were organised in the city on Sunday — one for cancer awareness and the other for charity.
As part of Cancer Institute’s Diamond Jubilee celebration, the ‘Race Against Cancer’ run was held at Island Grounds. Actor Suriya flagged off the run. He advised the participants to maintain an exercise schedule for 30 minutes daily and be a role model for the young generation by discouraging the use of tobacco. An oath was taken at the event against consumption of tobacco and packaged food products. The run consisted of two kilometres, four km and six km categories, Cancer Institute Chairperson Dr. V. Shanta was also present.
Hundreds of participants ran the annual Citizens’ Run at the Marina beach. V.R. Devika of ASEEMA, said three foundations would benefit from the event — Amenity Lifeline Emergency Response Team, International Alliance for the Prevention of Aids and Vanavil.
The Citizen’s Run Trust would be donating around Rs. six lakh to the three charity organisations, she said.
