A few joggers and walkers at the Dr. Visveswaraya Tower Park in Anna Nagar think it is high time the Chennai Corporation cleaned the pond found inside the facility. They said that nearly 5,000 people visited the park during weekends and a visually appealing pond would enhance the experience of visiting the park.

“With slushy pathways and stagnated muddy water, the pond gives a sombre look to the park,” said one jogger. A senior citizen from the area said, “As Thiru-Vi-Ka Park shares its space for Chennai Metro Rail, this is the only place for us to enjoy nature. A waterbody in a prime location of the city is a rare sight and now the beauty is lost, thanks to weeds and algae all over the pond.”

The pond is filled with plastic bottles and covers that were thrown by visitors.

Interestingly, the pond is just in front of the park supervisor’s office.

“It would be pleasant to see the pond filled with lotus leaves and flowers, along with ducks and swans. “We expect the authorities concerned to clean it as early as possible and restore its lost charm” says Umesh, a resident of Sixth Avenue, who work outs at the park in the evening.

S. Gokula Indira, MLA, Anna Nagar, inspected the park and interacted with the officials and park users recently.

She has asked the officials of the Chennai Corporation to prepare an estimate for de-silting the pond and Metrowater officials to check if there is any seepage of sewage water from neighbouring areas. She has also instructed the officials to plant more flowering plants so as to add colour to the park.

She said steps would be taken to set right the fountains, damaged walker’s path and that a clock would also be put up.
