The Government Railway Police (GRP) has developed a computer-generated image of the thief who pushed a woman software engineer from a moving suburban train on Monday night after snatching her gold chain.

The robbery took place in a ladies compartment when the victim Muneeshwari Nagaraj (28) of Arumbakkam was heading home from Tambaram station after work to Beach station.

When the train passed Park station, a man snatched her five-sovereign chain and pushed her out of the compartment in an attempt to grab her handbag. The techie fell near the tracks and miraculously survived with a broken arm while the suspect fled. She was rescued by passengers from an approaching train and taken to a hospital. The victim later informed investigators that the suspect was a thin young man who spoke in Hindi.

“We have developed an image using descriptions given by the victim. We are coordinating with the Railway Protection Force and the Chennai City Police to zero in on the suspect. Examination of CCTV footage in railway stations of Monday night is under way. We have some suspects and will hopefully apprehend the right one soon,” Seema Agarwal, Inspector General of Police, Railways, told The Hindu .

Security at all railway stations has been enhanced and a constable will be on duty on every platform, mainly at night, added Ms. Agarwal who inspected compartments and railway stations from Beach to Tambaram with her team on Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Muneeshwari, who was undergoing treatment at the orthopaedic ward of the Government Stanley Hospital, has been discharged, sources said.
