Tube Watch: The Newsroom season-3 from today

On Sunday, American TV drama fans will have reason to rejoice as the third and final season of The Newsroom, the Aaron Sorkin drama, airs on HBO.

The drama, centred on the goings-on in the fictional ACN newsroom, has always been one to invite polarised views.

While Season-1 was widely regarded by critics to have taken off to a doddering start, it was in Season-2 the show found its rhythm. Nevertheless, the show has nurtured a significant fan following that remains loyal and dogged in defence of the show.

For instance, 23-year-old Sumana Suresh, who works in a digital advertising agency, says, “I know many people accuse The Newsroom of being dramatic, but of course it will be. It’s a TV show! I’m a huge fan of the series because of the characters, the actors and just the way it’s been put together. It’s smart.”

However, like with any Aaron Sorkin product where expectations run high, there are many who are disappointed with the series.

Krish Prashanth, a young product consultant in the city, says, “Though I started watching with a lot of eagerness, I must confess I have kind of lost interest in the show. I’m a huge fan of Sorkin and his writing. I have watched The West Wing and loved every bit of it, but this show fades in comparison.” However, he says he will catch the final season eventually.

From Season-3 trailers that are out, one can expect an action-packed season. Not only does the crew of ACN have to firefight its way through the Boston Marathon bombings, but they also face tough choices in the wake of a Snowden-esque document dump by a whistle-blower.

Will Sorkin fans be sated this time around? We’ll just have to wait and find out.
