The buzz is all about Superstar’s next movie

There were some doubts over the summer box office releases. But with the first big film ‘Maan Karate’ getting released on Friday, to be followed by the likes of the Vishal-starrer ‘Naan Sigappu Manithan’ (April 11) and Vadivelu’s return vehicle ‘Tenaliraman’ (April 18), it is likely the release of the much-awaited ‘Superstar’ Rajinikanth’s ‘Kochadaaiyan’ might be pushed to the second half of May.

However, there is no official word from the ‘Kochadaaiyan’ camp.

Even while fans are awaiting with bated breath the return of the Superstar to Tamil screens four years after ‘Endhiran’, speculation is rife the next Rajinikanth-starrer will be directed by K.S. Ravikumar. It may be noted that at an event to celebrate Ravikumar’s 25 years in Tamil cinema, Rajinikanth, in a video message, had said he was looking forward to working again with the director. The duo was supposed to work on ‘Jaggubai’, and more recently, ‘Rana’, but both projects were dropped.

There is a new singing star on the horizon. Uthara Unnikrishnan, daughter of national award-winning playback singer and carnatic musician Unnikrishnan, is making her debut in the film ‘Saivam,’ directed by Vijay.

“I liked the song very much. My appa was with me and he corrected me when I went wrong,” says this student of class IV at Lady Andal School. The song is written by Na. Muthukumar and set to music by G.V. Prakash.

“My mother wrote down the lyrics in English for me and I listened to the song for about 15 minutes, and then it was recorded,” she says.

Uthara has been learning music from Sudha Raja for three years now. “She jams quite frequently with her brother. They listen to all kinds of music and sing everything from Western to film songs to classical,” says Priya Unnikrishnan, her mother. The audio of the film is set to be launched on Saturday.

Tamil cinema’s top heroines were rattled by the sensational declaration made by Lakshmi Menon at a recent press meet organised by Vishal, hero and co-producer of the film ‘Naan Sigappu Manithan’. Talking about the soon-to-be released film, Vishal was heaping praises on his heroine Lakshmi Menon, for her bold cooperation during the shoot. He narrated how Lakshmi had daringly acted in some underwater scenes, and also had a lip-lock with him in a sequence.

When it was her turn to speak, Lakshmi announced that she would not hesitate to act in kissing scenes provided the story required it, and she was even prepared to act in a kissing scene with any hero. The movie, which is jointly produced by UTV films, has been awarded a U/A certificate by the censor board.

The producers were asked to cut a few scenes and also trim the kissing sequence but, apparently, they opted to retain it as they felt it was critical to the narrative. This means the film foregoes the State government’s tax exemption as it applies only for films with a ‘U’ rating.
