When all five signals are on the blink

Cemetery Road intersection needs some urgent attention

R. Pradeep hates to take Thiruvottiyur High Road and Cemetery Road intersection in Royapuram. Crossing this intersection is a nightmare for this long-time resident of Royapuram and many others like him. But, they have no choice.

The intersection facilitates connectivity to Vallalar Nagar, George Town, Toll Gate and Ennore. The five non-functional traffic signals at the intersection make it difficult for pedestrians to cross the road.

Motorists and pedestrians have requested the Chennai Traffic Police to repair the defunct traffic signals at the intersection.

The signals were installed years ago and need maintenance. The constant flow of vehicular traffic from Vallalar Nagar, George Town and Ennore makes it difficult to negotiate the stretch without functional signals.

Motorists coming from Vallalar Nagar take a sharp right turn cutting through the traffic approaching the intersection from George Town and Ennore.

“The traffic police personnel deployed at the intersection remain a mute spectator to the chaos. Similar is the case with motorists from Royapuram who enter Thiruvottiyur High Road,” says Pradeep.

Some pedestrians sneak in through the space between the vehicles when they are caught in a traffic congestion.

“The cable wires of the signals posts got damaged. Steps will be taken to replace the damaged cable wires and ensure that the signal is in working order,” said a traffic personnel.
