Six cars and a motorcycle were gutted when a fire broke out at the parking lot attached to the Kotturpuram MRTS station early on Tuesday morning.

The parking attendant noticed the fire and alerted the Fire and Rescue Services. Some more vehicles were parked in the lot to which the fire did not spread. Around 50 cars use the parking lot on an average day.

Southern Railway Chennai Divisional Railway Manager S.Anantharaman said that a case of accidental fire has been registered by the Government Railway Police. “It is felt that some problem in the spark plug of the motorbike must be the root cause of the incident,” he said.

Parking lots in many MRTS stations have been plagued by problems of theft and lax management. The Chennai Beach – Velachery network, a distance of 25 km and 21 stations, has a parking contractor in only three or four stations. Car parking space is also not available in many of the stations. Sources said that one of the cars that went up in flames on Tuesday is believed to be that of Shanmugan, the DMK candidate for Ward 172 in the recent Chennai Corporation Council elections.
