An unusual calm, quite in contrast to the scene of the previous evening, prevailed outside the Gopalapuram house of DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday evening, after he was interred.
There was no sloganeering outside by the cadre and there were only a few stragglers hanging around the area. An armed policeman stood guard outside the house.
A garlanded photo of the DMK leader was placed on the compound wall of the house.
The white car which the DMK leader used to travel in, was missing from its usual place at the portico.
Around 7.30 p.m., DMK working president M.K. Stalin and other family members returned to the Gopalapuram house.
Following this, around 50 cadre gathered. After spending nearly half an hour, Mr. Stalin and family left, shortly after which, M.K. Alagiri also left.
“I have always wanted to meet Kalaignar and take a picture with him. I could not muscle my way through the crowd at Rajaji Hall, hence I came to the house,” said a 60-year-old Selvi Kumar, from Mylapore.
“There is an empty feeling now,” said M. Ismail, who was outside the house.
