With most schools in the city and the State denying students admission under the 25 per cent reservation through the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, activists are saying the admissions should be moved online, and the State government should take up the process of issuing admission.
When a group of NGOs, including Being I Foundation and Bhumi, called up schools across the city to find out if they were issuing applications under the RTE, out of 302 schools contacted, only 12 said they were handing out admissions. “This problem arises only because the schools have been given the power to admit students under the RTE,” K. Shanmugavelayutham from the Legal Resource Centre for Child Rights said.
If there was a centralised system, with the details available online, the government would be able to monitor the number of students admitted. “Currently, there are discrepancies in the figures quoted by the private schools and the number given by the State, which is delaying the process of release of funds from the Centre,” he said.
