BVM: parents’ demands largely met, classes to begin today

June 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - CHENNAI:

Following talks between the parents, teachers and management of Bala Vidya Mandir, all parties have agreed to start classes on Monday and parents have been instructed to send their children to school by 10 a.m. All the demands of the parents and teachers were met at the meeting except the inclusion of former CEO of the group S.S. Nathan in the School Management Committee (SMC).

The discussions, which were a continuation of the talks that took place on Saturday, ended late on Sunday. The meeting was chaired by A. S. Ramana Prasad, Managing Trustee, BVM Global.

On Saturday, the parents and teachers had placed forth their main demands, which included the reinstatement of Srinivasa Raghavan, the former principal of the school.

He had been transferred to BVM Global in Bollineni Hillside after he had sided with the teachers in their protest against the school’s circular offering children who paid higher fees more amenities.

They had also wanted reconstitution of the SMC to include Mr. Nathan, who had been terminated from service at the start of the protests.

They also wanted the removal of Meritus and Robotix from the school campus.

A few hours before these developments, political parties jumped into the fray asking the government to take charge of the issue. PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss issued a statement urging the government to take over administration in the school, similar to the action taken in the case of Annamalai University.

Expressing concern over the possibility of discrimination amongst students, R. Mutharasan, CPI State Secretary, also encouraged the government to take over the school to see education of the children was not affected.

Thol. Thirumavalavan, leader, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and members of The Loksatta Party also issued a statement to the same effect.

Inclusion of S.S. Nathan in SMC not accepted; Srinivasa Raghavan will return on Monday
