Building collapse: one more worker succumbs

Toll rises to 2; industrial safety inspectors visit site

The death toll in the accident at a construction site of a hospital in Kandanchavadi on Saturday evening has gone up to two.

A total of 32 were injured after the structure meant to house a generator collapsed. Of the injured, three were critical. On Monday morning, Rajan Choudary, a native of Bihar who had sustained head injuries, died, the police said.

On Saturday night, the structure under construction for a generator block collapsed on top of around 50 construction workers at the site. The body of Babloo, 27, a labourer, was recovered from the debris.

Meanwhile, Geetha Ramakrishnan, additional secretary of the Nirman Mazdoor Panchayat Sangam, said that she will be meeting the Labour Commissioner and the officials of the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) on Tuesday. “We will be submitting a representation on violation of safety rules and ensure that the injured get compensation,” she said.

Report sent to govt.

Officials of DISH said that they had inspected the accident site and sent a report to the government on safety at the construction site. “Based on the government’s recommendation we will take further action,” said an official.
