The Selaiyur police on Thursday arrested a 40-year-old person who allegedly strangled a 35-year-old woman to death and dumped her body in a septic tank.

The deceased has been identified as Devi, 35, of Villupuram. Three months ago, Gunasekaran, a farmer in Kovilanchery near Selaiyur engaged her for doing agricultural work. She was given shelter by him.

On March 3, a person joined her, saying he was her husband. The two went missing on March 16, and Gunasekaran lodged a complaint with the police.

Under such circumstances, a foul odour emanated from the septic tank of the house and he found the body of Devi inside the tank. The police arrested Manikandan, 40, who was living with her. He had an illicit relationship with her and had given her ₹3 lakh.

He had repeatedly demanded that she repay the money. During a quarrel, he strangled her to death using her clothes and dumped her body in the pit before escaping from the place.
