A BJP functionary was arrested in Maduravoyal police station limits for allegedly setting fire to his own car following a family dispute. He was released on station bail on Friday.

Sathish Kumar, 48, is BJP district secretary, Tiruvallur West and a resident of Krishna Nagar in Maduravoyal. On Thursday, flames wer seen in the bonnet of the car parked adjacent to his house. Members of the public quickly put out the fire.

A patrolling team of the police reached the spot and took up the investigation although Kumar did not file any complaint. Following speculation in the media that petrol bombs were hurled on the car, senior police officers asked the local police to investigate further.

During interrogation on Friday, Kumar disclosed that he had a quarrel with his wife as she forced him to buy jewellery by selling his car. Angered by this, he told the police that he had set fire to his car. The police arrested him and released him later.
