“We would prove that the Madurai advocates are not guilty of any offence,” said advocate R.C. Paul Kanagaraj, who represented the 14 advocates against whom the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has initiated disciplinary proceedings for their acts against the compulsory helmet rule directed by the Madras High Court.
The proceedings, initiated at the behest of the BCI, was held here on Monday in the State Bar Council building on the High Court premises. During the second day of the proceedings, eleven among the 14 advocates appeared before the disciplinary committee comprising advocates Ranganathan, Varathan and senior advocate Venkataramani.
As the prime witnesses to the proceeding – the Commissioner of Police, Madurai and others officials failed to appear before the committee on Monday, the proceedings was adjourned to October 27.
Briefing the media after participating in the proceedings, Mr. Kanagaraj said “The one month time granted by the BCI to complete the proceeding will be over by October 21. Hence, the State Bar Council has requested the BCI to extend the time limit. Accepting the request, the BCI has granted one more month’s time.”
