Automotive engineering unit workers protest


Tension prevailed on Monday at the Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare Board Building as workers of Motherson Automotive Technologies and Engineering (MATE) protested demanding that their slew of demands, including higher wages, be resolved.

The workers have been on strike for 85 days at the plant in Pondur village of Kancheepuram district are also seeking recognition for their union and reinstatement of workers who were terminated.

“The company has terminated the service of 28 workers citing performance-related issues and suspended 56 workers for participating in the strike. No resolution has been found for the issues and we have been on strike from August,” said Murugan, president, MATE plant union. The workers shouted slogans demanding quick resolution to their issues. Police intervened and made them disperse.

The Labour Department officials are slated to hold negotiations with the company management on November 21, officials said.
