The civic body will install automated sprinkler systems in its parks to use water more effectively, and also improve landscaping.

The sprinklers will not only save water, but also result in improving greenery in its parks, officials hope.

At a meeting it was decided to identify large parks to begin the launch of water sprinklers. The existing system of maintenance of parks involves various departments, leading to a delay in rectifying defects in parks. The Chennai Corporation plans to simplify the process of repairing equipment.

Officials have recently asked workers to finish watering plants before 7 a.m. during the summer. Personnel from the Tamilnadu Ex-Servicemen’s Corporation Limited (Texco) will help to monitor the parks.

The civic body has also started outsourcing maintenance of parks to private contractors, who will be responsible for maintenance of the entire range of facilities, including toilets, lawns, greenery, fountain, footpaths, benches and light fittings.

Corporation staff will monitor their performance with frequent field visits and also interactions with residents. The civic body will also ask the contractors to maintain the parks for three years.

Some of the major parks where facilities are likely to improve include Anna Park in Royapuram, Secretariat Park on Rajaji Salai, Perambur flyover park, Dr. Visweshwariah Tower Park in Anna Nagar, Jai Nagar Park in Koyambedu, May Day Park in Chintadripet, Independence Day Park in Nungambakkam, Panagal Park, Natesan Park, Jeeva Park in T. Nagar, Erikarai Park in Nesapakkam, Sivan Park in K.K. Nagar, Dr. Nageshwara Rao Park in Mylapore and Indira Nagar Park in Adyar.
