At fete, govt. vows award in honour of composer

Minister for Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture K. Pandiarajan on Thursday said efforts would be made to institute an award in the name of Carnatic composer Papanasam Sivan.

Speaking at the 129th birth anniversary of Brahmasri Papanasam Sivan, organised by Papanasam Sivan Rasikar Sangam in association with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, he said the award perhaps could be for schoolchildren in the age group of 12-16, who are multifaceted like the composer himself was. Mr. Pandiarajan also presented the title of Sivanisai Selvi to Carnatic vocalist Gayathri Venkatraghavan for her contribution to propagating the songs of Papanasam Sivan.

Sivan’s daughter and musicologist Rukmini Ramani urged the State government to construct a memorial for the composer, who had written over 2,000 songs for 98 films.

The Sangam’s secretary and vocalist Papanasam Ashok Ramani said concerts would be held daily during the six-day long festival.
