An aspiring actor allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the apartment of his partner in Virugambakkam in the early hours of Monday. His death drove his partner, a well-known actor herself, to attempt suicide, police said.

K. Sachidhanandham, Inspector of Police, Virugambakkam identified the deceased as Vinod Kumar (26) a native of Kalpakkam, who was residing with actor Alphonsa (32) in her flat on Arcot Road. “Around 1.30 a.m., in one of the bedrooms, Alphonsa found Vinod hanging with her stockings from the ceiling fan. She alerted the building security who called the 108 ambulance service,” Mr. Sachidhanandham said. Paramedics who reached the flat declared Vinod to be dead. Following which the police was alerted, the Inspector added.

A police team from Virugambakkam conducted preliminary enquires and sent the body to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem. A case of unnatural death has been registered and further probe is underway to ascertain the reason behind Vinod taking the extreme step, police sources said.

Meanwhile, Alphonsa, who was allegedly upset over the sudden death of her partner, attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills. Relatives rushed her to a private hospital on Arcot Road, where she is undergoing treatment. Her condition is said to be stable.

Relatives of Vinod Kumar have expressed suspicions over his death. His uncle Sukumaran has lodged a complaint with the Virugambakkam police, saying it could be a case of murder, sources added.
