Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) may launch an app for smartphone users once Metro Rail is up and running.

“We plan to provide such a provision to increase patronage for Metro. The app may have several features including fares, distance between stations and travel time,” said a CMRL official.

However, the app will most likely be launched only after the entire stretch of the 45-km network becomes functional by 2015.

About a month ago, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said it would launch such an app at a cost of Rs. 3.65 lakh and sent a notice inviting tenders for the same.

The DMRC app is expected to provide additional information such as Metro Rail network maps and helplines.
