App helps nab thieves

DigiCop, a recently launched mobile application, came in handy for a prospective buyer of a mobile phone in detecting that it was a stolen handset.

In February, the Chennai city police launched the app, using which one can check the status of stolen two-wheelers and cell phones. A 17-year-old boy had stolen a high-end mobile from Guindy eight months ago, the police said.

He sold it to Syed Ibrahim who put it up for sale online.

Rajesh, the prospective buyer, used DigiCop to identify the mobile as stolen. He informed the police who arrested both culprits.
