A portion of road on Anna Salai, which caved-in on Sunday night due to the tunnelling work carried out for the underground stretch of the Chennai Metro Rail near DMS Teynampet in Chennai.

A crater in the size of a manhole developed on the busy Anna Salai near DMS subway on Sunday evening. Traffic diversion was effected to minimize congestion.

The crater's size, according to police and Metro rail staff on the site, was increasing on the road, underneath which Teynampet metro station is being built. "The depth is nearly 30 feet. Hence we barricaded the stretch to prevent vehicles from going in," said an police officer.

According to J. Raju, whose autorickshaw's front wheel was stuck in the crater, the incident happened around 7.30 p.m. "I was taking a passenger to Kotturpuram and the front mudguard was caught in the hole. I was frightened as in April, an MTC bus and a car were trapped in a huge crater," he said.

A woman travelling in the auto fell down but was not injured. The vehicle was pulled away.

According to Metro Rail staff at the site, the work on constructing stair case and elevator to reach the road from the underground station was going on. Police said the stretch, that was damaged due to rains, was relaid few days ago.
