Anbumani writes to Jayalalithaa for repair of Chennai roads

October 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - CHENNAI:

PMK MP Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday urged Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to take steps on a war footing to repair the roads in Chennai before the onset of the North East monsoon, saying the city roads were witnessing maximum number of accidents in the country.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, he said in 2014 alone Chennai had 9,465 accidents and 1,046 of them were fatal.

“Vehicle population is high in the city and more people, particularly women use two-wheelers. The roads are full of potholes and the two-wheeler riders are suffering from many ailments, particularly in joints. North-East monsoon will further aggravate the situation,” he said, adding that corruption was one of the reasons for the bad condition of roads.

If Chennai Corporation had followed the rules of the Indian Road Congress the road would have been in better condition, Mr. Anbumani said.

“Lack of coordination between various government agencies also contributed to the bad condition. The government should also blacklist contractors responsible for poor roads,” he said.
