A flex banner map showing the Chennai suburban railway route welcomes commuters at the Urapakkam railway station. The station is the riot of colour with various shades decorating the benches, dustbins, pillars of the overhead shelters, water taps, foot overbridge pillars and an electricity junction box. Thanks to the effort taken by Rajesh Kannan Yadav, a resident of Urapakkam. As part of his ‘Swachh Bharat’ mission campaign, he has spruced up the premises of the railway station. Apart from sweeping the platforms every day, he has painted the walls of the station, to stop people from spitting.

Near the water taps, he has drawn a kolam and requested people not to spit on the station premises. He has put up ‘Swachh Bharat’ warning boards at various spots inside the station.

The images of Mahatma Gandhi adorn the outer walls of the ticket counter and the doors of the EB junction box. Potted plants and LED lights near the foot overbridge attract the commuters. “After seeing my efforts to keep the station clean, a beggar has vowed not to spit or dispose of trash on the premises,” says Rajesh who can be reached at 9840283359.
