Veketachalam Nagar Residents Welfare Association in Thirumullavoyal, near Ambattur, recently improved CCTV surveillance in the locality. Here is their experience presented as a super-short two-step formula.

1. Seek experts

The Association sought out retired police officers to draw up a safety plan for the neighbourhood. The choice was dictated by the consideration that retired police officials would have more time and also the necessary expertise in the matter.

2. Become experts

Along the way, an association should work towards growing expertise, in-house, to make the initiative sustainable. With the help of young techies in the neighbourhood, the Association ensured images from the CCTV cameras could be monitored on android mobile sets of residents. They decided to go in for dummy cameras, costing just ₹25, that could be placed in front of the real cameras. This way, miscreants are more likely to destroy the dummy cameras than the real ones.
