A group of NGOs with support from the Greater Chennai Corporation and volunteers on Sunday launched an app for locating and rating public toilets in the city.

The app was launched at the International Toilet Festival held in Santhome on Sunday.

Residents will be able to locate the nearest public toilets using the Kakkoos App, which was launched by Chepauk- Thiruvallikeni MLA Udhayanidhi Stalin. Mayor R. Priya and Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi were present.

Residents will be able to rate the toilets for hygiene, safety and maintenance. Over 150 volunteers from various colleges have mapped 1,497 public toilets, including public toilets at 806 locations and toilets in malls, fuel outlets and commercial buildings.

Fifteen cleanest public toilets were identified in the 15 zones and the conservancy inspector received prizes from the MLA.

“The initiative to improve public toilets will have an impact on public health of all residents. Chennai public toilets should become the cleanest in the country,” he said

The best toilets will have the certificate for one year and another round of mapping will be held after one year. Residents who use the public toilets will be able to rate the facilities and the Corporation will take action to improve the facilities.

The Corporation distributed kits to sanitation workers and created awareness about the need for better maintenance of public toilets.

The Mayor thanked the volunteers and Kiruthika Udhayanidhi for the initiative to improve public toilets in the city.
