The State government will fill 274 vacant posts of Village Administrative Officers and other vacancies in the Revenue Department in the districts to improve services, Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran said.

Announcing various schemes under the Revenue and Disaster Management Department in the Assembly on Monday, Mr. Ramachandran said the Village Administrative Officers played a key role in protecting government land and natural resources in each village. “Village administration is the basis of revenue administration. The VAOs recommend issuance of various certificates, implement welfare schemes, and register births and deaths. In addition to the VAOs, many other posts in the Revenue Department are vacant. The government will fill the posts through various competitive examinations held by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission,” Mr. Ramachandran said.

The government has also proposed to promote the computerisation of various aspects of the Revenue Department to improve services. “The people will be able to avail themselves of services without visiting the taluk office. Services through mobile phone will improve. Certificates such as the community certificate should be issued in seven days. We will monitor the delivery of services,” the Minister said.

Pointing to the need for better infrastructure for the Revenue Department, Mr. Ramachandran said new buildings will be developed in 10 taluk offices in the State. A total of 50 office buildings and quarters for revenue inspectors will be developed in various parts of the State at an estimated cost of ₹13.5 crore, he said.

In a bid to improve welfare assistance for the weaker sections, the post of Special Tahsildar for Social Security Schemes will be created in areas such as Madhavaram in Chennai district, Kurinchipadi in Cuddalore district and Kollimalai in Namakkal district.

A Centre for Disaster Recovery will be set up at Nambiyar Nagar in Nagapattinam. The disaster control rooms in 38 districts of the State will be modernised.

A new taluk of Thiruonam will be formed in Thanjavur district, and Vanapuram taluk in Kallakurichi district. Additional vehicles will be procured for disaster management, and training facilities will be developed. Facilities to download town survey land records will be launched. GIS and modern technology in survey and settlement will be launched. Districts such as Chennai, Virudhunagar, Coimbatore, Namakkal and Tiruvarur will get modern infrastructure for land survey and settlement.

Software will be developed for issuance of patta online in cities, towns and town panchayats.
