To gear up for the the Global Investors Meet (GIM) 2019, to be held in January, the Chennai airport will be spruced up.

Officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) said they have planned to give a facelift to a host of facilities at the airport.

Since the maintenance of toilets at the terminals has attracted a lot of criticism, sprucing them up is the immediate priority, officials said.

“We have already begun the work, the toilets are being renovated and we are working on the aerobridge corridor of the international terminal. There are also some changes to ease the immigration process for the delegates,” an official said. In a few weeks, additional immigration staff will be deployed at the airport, he added.

Separate counters

Separate counters have been set up for e-visas, foreign passports and passengers having Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) passports, he said.

“This apart we plan to install some dynamic signages so that passengers don’t have issues moving inside the terminals and to the exit,” he said.

A special parking area will be created for the those coming to attend the GIM 2019. This is significant because there is already a flurry of activity outside the terminals, for construction of the multi-level car parking facility. So, unless there are some additional signages and an exclusive parking area, it may be challenging to park the vehicles and pick up the delegates, sources said.

More manpower

“We will deploy additional manpower and put up some facilitation counters to help those arriving at the airport. In addition to our counters, the State also plans to send some staff and have some counters,” he added.

Even when the first ever Global Investors Meet happened in 2015, the airport was revamped.
