Airport ramp may ease traffic

Work had begun years ago but was disrupted by CMRL work

June 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

Entering and exiting the Chennai airport may soon become easier for passengers and vehicles as the centre ramp in the airport will be open for public use shortly.

Currently, when vehicles take the service road for the new domestic departure, they have to travel up to the international terminal and then exit the airport.

If this ramp (located between the two departure terminals and leading to the exit gate) is opened, the traffic flow is likely to get better, officials said.

Review meeting soon

Airport director Deepak Shastri said, “Officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said they will hand it over to us by September or October. Normal traffic will begin in the airport by then. We plan to conduct the review meeting soon.”

The work on the ramp started a few years ago and had been disrupted owing to the construction of the Chennai Metro Rail station coming up inside the airport premises.

During the construction of the Metro Rail station and the ramp, passengers suffered from severe traffic congestion in the service road of the airport.

Work complete

But CMRL officials said the construction of ramp work was complete and it can be opened anytime.

So, it is not clear why it may take a few more months to open the ramp for public use.

“They finished the structural work of the Metro Rail station. We have started carrying out the internal work that includes placement of tiles, plumbing and electrical work,” an official of CMRL said.
