Airport metro station almost complete

The construction of Chennai Metro Rail station at airport is nearing completion.

According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the major part of the structural work is complete with only some interior work is pending. “Most of the work has been completed. Only plumbing, electrification and a few other engineering works are still in progress which will soon be completed,” an official said.

This Metro Rail station here is a massive five-level terminal spread over 17,300 square metres and provides direct link for commuters to the airport. With this link, the station becomes the second in the country after New Delhi to have a similar connectivity.

Just like in New Delhi, there will be a check-in facility at the Chennai Central Metro Rail station allowing passengers to complete the procedures here and head to the airport in the Metro.

The Chennai Metro Rail, built at a cost of Rs. 14,600 crore, has 32 stations — 19 underground and 13 elevated. The Airport station is the last on corridor II that connects the 23-kilometre stretch from Washermanpet. The corridor I is the 22-km stretch from Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount. After five years of construction, the first service between Koyambedu to Alandur ws launched in June, this year. The next stretch to become operational will be the one from Little Mount to Airport in March 2016.
