The AIADMK on Saturday attributed the low turnout in the Greater Chennai Corporation’s election to the “violence” resorted to by the ruling party.
In petitions to State Election Commissioner V. Palanikumar and Commissioner of Police Shankar Jiwal, the party’s legal advisory committee member and former legislator R.M. Babu Murugavel said the voter turnout in the city was 41% (as at 5 p.m.).
Also, the Election Commission and the police had become “handmaidens” of the DMK. Only for a few complaints, the SEC and the Police Commissioner had given replies but they had not eliminated the problems. An Additional Director-General of Police in charge of the election did not even look at a single complaint or give a response, Mr. Murugavel claimed.
The AIADMK functionary criticised the Election Commission for having “disregarded” directions of the High Court issued in January. Referring to five wards where, according to Mr. . Murugavel, had seen trouble, he wanted the Police Commissioner to take action against the wrong doers. He called upon the SEC to order re-polling in the wards.
