Following the death of two youth from Chennai at the Saddikuti Madugu falls (popularly known as the Nagalapuram waterfalls) in Chitoor district, nearly 100 km from Chennai, the Andhra Pradesh police are planning put up a fence to prevent tourists from entering the waterfalls and also to erect danger signboards.

On Monday, Kamesh, Raja, Prabhakaran, Yashwant Singh and Yasin from Madhavaram in Chennai went to the falls.

They travelled by motorbikes and went for a swim in the falls that is surrounded by hills and dense forest cover.

“Around 4 p.m., the five tried to get down through a narrow creek into the waterfall. However, Yashwanth and Yasin were swept away and fell into a deep pool,” said a police officer attached to the Nagalapuram police station.

“Their friends tried to take the bodies on a bike back to Chennai. However, the villagers informed us of the incident and we intercepted the youth nearly a kilometre from the falls,” the police officer added.

“On an average, five people die here every year. Every weekend, we send a police team to patrol the locality and ensure that no one ventures into the falls,” said the police officer.

Better coordination

Now, the police are planning to coordinate with the Forest Department and civic bodies to install a fence and signboards so that such fatalities could be avoided. “Discussions are on to take the work forward,” he said.
