Abraham Eraly dead

Acclaimed historical author and founder of Aside magazine Abraham Eraly died recently at Puducherry following a brief illness. He was 81.

Born in Kerala, Eraly who completed post graduate course in History at Madras Christian College went on to become a history professor at the College.

He taught there for over two decades before he started ‘Aside’ and served as its editor.

His brother George Ivan recalls that Eraly made writing as a career for over two decades and authored over 10 titles. “Except for one work of fiction, ‘Night of the Dark Tree,’ his works were on history. His last title was ‘The Age of Wrath’ on the Delhi Sultanate published in 2013. He was working on a book on Indian culture before he was hospitalised at Jipmer, Puducherry,” he said.

Having spent over 35 years in Chennai, Eraly moved to Puducherry about four years ago. He died on April 8. He is survived by his wife Sita Eraly and son Satish Eraly.
