Happy homecoming: Santhosh Narayanan, music composer, is welcomed by A.M. Jayapathy Francis, rector of Loyola College. G. Viswanathan, chancellor, VIT University, centre, and Arokiasamy Xavier, principal, are in the picture.

From designers to directors, alumni who have excelled in various fields were honoured by the Loyola Alumni Association and department of visual communication at the ‘Loyola Alumni Media Blitz’ on Sunday.

G. Viswanathan, chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), reminisced about his days at the college in the 50s. “People would say we were lucky if we got admission here. There were students from Malaysia, Africa and even Sri Lanka. It’s heartening to see how it has grown over the years,” he said.

Santhosh Kumar, head of Think Music and an alumnus of the college, said the institution had a great role to play in facilitating his entry into music. “In 2002 and 2003, I attempted to get admission in visual communication course, but I couldn’t get through the entrance examination. I finally joined the mathematics department and continued to participate in cultural events. During one such event, when I composed ringtones, I was spotted and subsequently got an opportunity to enter [the music and film industry],” he added.

Music director Santhosh Narayanan recollected how Santhosh Kumar was instrumental in fetching him a chance in the film Attakathi .

Rector A.M. Jayapathy Francis of Loyola College said, “Over nearly three decades, the institution has grown by leaps and bounds,” he added.

The alumni honoured during the event include designers Sidney Sladen and Gina Joseph, film director Kithika Udhayanidhi and photographers G. Venkatram, Satyajit, Sreenag and Nitin Bharath.
