A month has elapsed since the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) completed repairs on a sewage drain on the service lane along the subway on Madley Road in T. Nagar. But, the Greater Chennai Corporation is yet to begin work on relaying the lane, which has been just levelled with blue metal.
As motorists avoid the damaged portion and try to use only the undamaged portion of the road, there is traffic congestion, especially during rush hour.
Unauthorised parking of vehicles on the dug-up stretch makes things worse.
“Autorickshaws can be found parked along the stretch. This makes the road narrower and it is difficult to drive. Moreover, the stretch is not well-lit. Therefore, during night the road is quite unsafe,” says K. Raghavan, a resident of West Mambalam. Besides, Madley subway gets flooded whenever it rains, say residents. According to Corporation officials, CMWSSB has paid the fee charged on account of digging up the road. It has also issued a no-objection certificate to the Corporation stating that its work is complete and the road can be relaid.
Despite these clearances, the stretch has not been relaid because there is a continuous flow of traffic on Madley Road.
However, the work will begin soon; and the relaying work will be carried out at night, add the officials.
