In Chennai, August and September are usually considered the best time of the year to start tree-planting drives.
Now, there could be questions residents may have about how they can go about it.
As is well-knwon, for the guidance of residents in this matter, the Greater Chennai Corporation has provided tree planting guidelines at its website, which include details of native tree species.
There is also granularity to the information that is provided, with the tree species being specified, factoring in the road width.
Now, from the raft of native trees listed by GCC, can a few trees be named for their ability to provide greater canopy than most other trees, and to support biodiversity in a bigger way?
“Poovarasu and neem trees can provide great canopy. Naaval trees draw many birds for their fruits and therefore, promote biodiversity,” says a Corporation official attached to the parks department.
Can residents’ groups source native tree saplings free from Greater Chennai Corporation?
"Yes. Saplings will be provided, but only in limited numbers," says the Corporation official.
Is there a cap on the number of saplings one can expect to receive?
“Up to 10 saplings, and that too depends on availability," says the Corporation official.
Does GCC honour residents’ groups through awards or any special mention for any exemplary efforts to maintain saplings planted in their neighbourhoods?
“GCC has not done it earlier. The idea is in the pipeline; and will be explored in the near future,” says the Corporation official.
